Whilst flying slightly east of track at Coburg, attacked by a night fighter using Schrage Musik (Maj Martin Drewes, III/NJG1) and without returning fire, crashed and exploded at Ahorn, in the south-west suburbs of Coburg. Crew on 3rd operation of 2nd tour; 7 killed. All members of the crew are buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery. Six bodies were found near the main fuselage wreckage, and the tail unit was found some distance away with Trevor-Roper still in the turret.
F/L Cadman's DFM with 49 Sqdn, gazetted 22 Oct 40.
F/L Trevor-Roper had been Guy Gibson's rear gunner on the Dams Raid, and earlier with 50 Sqdn, DFM gazetted 23 Dec 41. He came from a gentry family, Eton, and Oxford and at the time of the Dams Raid (May 1943) his wife was about to give birth.
